We asked archaeologists, historians, and classicists: who are the archaeologists the public should know? These profiles aim to share the life and work of archaeologists you should know, and to celebrate the significance of archaeological inquiry, highlight the excitement of archaeological discovery, and inspire archaeology enthusiasts as well as professional archaeologists. Our aim with this feature is to call attention to archaeologists whose work has been overlooked and/or who represent new directions in the field.

ARCHAEOLOGY has been published continuously for more than 70 years by the Archaeological Institute of America, which is dedicated to supporting archaeological inquiry and to fostering the pursuit of knowledge about human heritage. The March/April 2022 issue of ARCHAEOLOGY explores how the emperor Constantine fashioned his triumphal arch to reflect his vision of Rome’s past and future. Other stories include sounding out a popular Greek poem, exploring an Aztec magic mirror’s origins, the truth behind Kublai Khan’s failed invasion, and a deep dive into a lost world under the North Sea.

The AJA, one of the world's most respected journals devoted to Mediterranean archaeology, has set the standard for archaeological scholarship since 1885. The April 2022 issue brings readers a systematic investigation of the material properties of objects with early Greek alphabetic writing; a study of a hoard of gold coins found during excavations at Patara; analysis of Late Antique child and infant burials at Poggio Gramignano; the reconstruction of the movement and iconography of a lost Early Christian lead vessel from Carthage; and an account of amending the museum catalogue entries for two watercolors of Sardis. Open access content includes a field report on survey and excavation work in the Kasakh River valley, Armenia, documenting human occupation from the Paleolithic through historic periods and the environmental context, and a review of the redesigned galleries at the Oriental Institute Museum of the University of Chicago.
